The Persistence of Time" © 2003, D. Wilsey (ASCAP): (CBS). An original work commissioned by figure skating Olympic gold medalist Brian Boitano. He and his choreographer (David Liu) requested a composition filled with lush orchestration, elements of rock, electronica, and high drama. Brian will be portraying a detective while skating to this piece and its follow- up "Cliffhanger", and requested that the music reflect an overall mood of action and suspense. The Persistence of Time begins with an Alfred Hitchcock-type theme and then kicks into a high-paced action motif (similar in nature to that of James Bond or Mission Impossible). Brian's choreographer adores the theme from the HBO series Six Feet Under and wanted similar orchestration for The Persistence of Time during its opening thematic stage. Brian also stressed that his audience is "middle America." As such, it was imperative that this music be clear in its depiction; a detective at odds with some nefarious antagonist. Additionally, both Boitano and Lui wanted ample sound effects to enhance the overall tone; most notably is an old typewriter that was sampled, spliced, and matched;click-by-click, the an accompanying percussion part.
